County Websites show property as wetlands

Recently, many municipality and county GIS (Geographic Information System) websites have provided the National Wetland Inventory (NWI) maps that can be overlayed with property boundaries. These mappings were started in the 1970’s by the Department of Interior’s United States Fish and Wildlife Service to track gains and losses of wetlands and ultimately to study the impact to our environment. Much of the data was created from photographic interpretations from aerial photography. A very limited amount of this data has been ground truthed and thus should only be considered a tool.
